GameStop Presses ThinkGeek Brick-And-Mortar Growth

GameStop has opened its first ThinkGeek retail location in New York City and said it plans to open an additional 25 U.S. locations this year.

GameStop’s 33rd and Broadway location has been reconfigured so that the gaming chain now occupies one floor while accessory-maker ThinkGeek occupies the other. The building, which is branded with both logos, held a grand-opening celebration for consumers earlier this month.

The opening marks GameStop’s fourth ThinkGeek store; the first opened in Orlando, Fla., in September.

Cowboy Maloney’s Opens 13th Store

Mississippi’s Cowboy Maloney’s latest location formally opened in Oxford, Miss., home of the University of Mississippi.

Although it’s the first Cowboy Maloney’s in town, the chain, led by brothers Con, Eddie and Johnny Maloney, is no stranger to Ole Miss. Eddie, the company’s president (and Class of ’72), also presides over the university’s alumni association, and is a past chairman of its business school advisory board.

On opening morning in Oxford, a 100-customer-long queue formed outside the store, drawn in part, said brother and executive VP Johnny Maloney, by the chain’s guaranteed lowest prices, extended financing offers, no credit-check option, and 90-day window to pay.

Target Tags Nordstrom’s Mark Tritton As Chief Merchant

Target has brought in Nordstrom private-label chief Mark Tritton as executive VP and chief merchandising officer, filling a 10-month vacancy.

He succeeds Kathee Tesija, a 30-year Target veteran who is credited with creating the discounter’s upscale “Tar-jay” cachet. She left the post in July and reportedly served in an advisory role until last month.

Tritton appears to fit the bill of Target chairman/CEO Brian Cornell, who was looking to sharpen the company’s focus on its core “signature categories” of style, baby, kids and wellness.

At Nordstrom, Tritton oversaw the merchandising, design, manufacturing, marketing and omnichannel distribution of more than 50 private-label brands.
