Gaming & Points Cards Had Best June In History

Port Washington, N.Y. — June was a good month for gaming.

The category welcomed across-the-board growth with an overall sales increase of 18 percent, according to The NPD Group. Gaming and point cards had their best June in history and totaled $31 million, said the company, which began tracking the segment in 2002.

Gaming accessories, a reliable growth segment for the category, had another strong month with overall sales reaching $210.7 million. Interactive gaming toys rose 44 percent compared to last year, and they’re up 23 percent year to date, said NPD.

Hardware sales, meanwhile, rose 8 percent for the month compared to June 2014, reaching $313.1 million. Bundles took up the bulk of this, accounting for 82 percent of hardware sales.

The No. 1 software game for June was “Batman: Arkham Knight.” Despite being only available for 12 sales days, it is already the second highest-selling game of the year, NPD said. (“Mortal Kombat X” is the first.) If sales from hardware bundles are included, “Batman” captures the No. 1 spot.
