Tablet, Smartphone, E-Reader Adoption Rising: Survey

New York - The number of consumers using smartphones, tablets, e-readers, and netbooks continued to rise in the first quarter compared to the year-ago period, a Nielsen Company survey of 12,000 consumers found.

 Nielsen also found that e-reader users are more likely than tablet or smartphone users to use their device in bed, while users of smartphones and tablets are more likely to use those devices while watching TV.

 In tracking the adoption rate of mobile devices, Nielsen said the number of consumers using smartphones hit 36 percent in the first quarter of this year compared to 23 percent in the year-ago quarter. The number of people using tablets rose to 4.8 percent from a year-ago 2.9 percent, and the number using e-readers rose to 9 percent from a year-ago 3 percent.

 The netbook percentage rose to 8.2 percent from a year-ago 5.8 percent.

In the survey, Nielsen found that the penetration of portable media players (PMPs and MP3 players) slipped, though only slightly, to 13 percent from a year-ago 14 percent, likely because of the swift uptake in A/V-storing smartphones.

In surveying consumers about where they use their devices, how they its dveice-usage other findings, Nielsen said 70 percent of tablet owners and 68 percent of smartphone owners say they use their devices while watching television. Only 35 percent of eReader owners do so. In addition, 61 percent of eReader owners use their device in bed, while 57 percent of tablet owners and 51 percent of smartphone owners do so.
