San Diego — Sony Electronics introduced Monday an SXRD-based FullHD 3D home cinema projector.
Sony’s VPL-HW40ES, which joins the VPL-HW55ES in the line, will be available in April in black for less than $2,500.
“The VPL-HW40ES home-theater projector is ideal for those that want a larger screen than a flat-panel TV can provide, but at a reasonable cost,” said Yamato Tanikawa, Sony Electronics home entertainment director. “Also, this projector takes up little space and can be used with a retractable screen that is out of sight when not in use, perfect for those that do not want a large TV to be the focal point of their home decor.”
The unit includes Sony’s Reality Creation video-processing technology, said to reproduce colors and textures in extreme clarity at the pixel level.
The unit’s updated optical engine produces 1,700 lumens of color brightness, sufficient for high performance in ambient room lighting.
Other features include Sony’s Bright Cinema and Bright TV mode, with SXRD panels that enhance the 3D image.
A Contrast Enhancer system analyzes scenes in real time, continuously optimizing dynamic range in each area of the image for rich, deep blacks and sparkling highlights, Sony said.
Sport and action scenes also benefit from Motionflow technology, which inserts extra images between the original frames, to provide smoother, sharper and more fluid onscreen motion with less blur, Sony said.
An extra-wide lens shift range enables more options for positioning the projector from a ceiling mount or off-center horizontally.
Other features include a built-in IR 3D transmitter that automatically recognizes 2D or 3D content and offers a choice of picture modes, and noise-shaping that keeps fan sounds to a lower frequency, emitting only 21dB.
