Samsung Developed Lens Mount For New Hybrid

Las Vegas — Samsung developed its own lens mount for its forthcoming NX hybrid camera, according to Choong Hyun Hwang, product planning group VP, Samsung.

Samsung and Pentax have a technology-sharing agreement that gave Samsung access to Pentax lens mounts for Samsung’s digital SLRs. The new hybrid interchangeable-lens camera system, however, will be proprietary to Samsung.

The partnership with Pentax will continue, but the company will increasingly focus on its hybrid system, Hwang said.

Samsung expects the global market for so-called “hybrid” cameras to encompass 20 percent of unit sales by 2012, Hwang said. Overall, the digital camera market will contract in the face of the downturn, Hwang said, but digital SLRs will continue to grow.

Globally, Samsung has captured 12 percent of the camera market for a No. 3 share position, Hwang noted.

After

integrating its camera business

into Samsung electronics last year, the company is attempting to grab a greater share of the U.S. market, as CE rivals such as

Panasonic

and Sony are also ramping up efforts to improve market shares in the high-end camera market.
