Qualcomm Launches Toq Smart Watch

SAN DIEGO – Qualcomm subsidiary Qualcomm Connected Experiences has begun to offer its Toq smartwatch for $349 through the company’s Toq online store, toq.qualcomm.com.

The company’s hasn’t said whether the watch would also be made available through other channels.

The device, positioned as a secondary display for Android smartphones and tablets, features the company’s Mirasol display, said to be visible even in direct sunlight.

At launch, Toq (pronounced ‘talk’) is compatible with Android 4.0.3 and above smartphones and tablets.

From the touchscreenequipped smart watch, consumers will be able to manage smartphone calls, control the playback of smartphone- stored music, and view text messages, meeting reminders and notifications even if the tablet or smartphone is tucked away in a pocket or carry bag.

The smart watch features the company’s lowpower color Mirasol display technology, which enables the watch’s color capacitive touchscreen to remain on at all times. Mirasol shuns a traditional backlight and instead uses ambient light to light up the screen and enable viewing in bright sunlight, the company said. The watch delivers days of battery life before it needs to be recharged, and as a result, the watch is not equipped with an on/off button, the company said.

Toq features Qualcomm’s WiPower LE wirelesscharging technology.

To keep the watch body thin, the company embedded electronic components inside the band and a battery in the clasp, so the watch strap isn’t interchangeable.
