El Segundo, Calif. -
About 1.2 billion electronic products sporting built-in wireless local area
networking (WLAN) will ship in 2011.

The 2011 figure is up from 880,333 in 2010 and is expected to hit
over 2.1 billion by 2015, according to IHS iSuppli. Only 1 percent of all
devices featured embedded WLAN in 2002.

Cellphones will comprise the largest WLAN-equipped product
segment with 512.8 million units set to ship this year. Mobile computers are in
second place with 230.1 million units, IHS said.

Looking ahead, car head units will experience a very high WLAN
inclusion rate with the number shipped with the technology increasing by 98
percent between 2010 and 2015. Not far behind will be LCD TVs growing at a 77.8
percent rate. By 2015 IHS expects the majority of televisions shipped will have
WLAN capability, up from about 9 percent in 2011.

The research firm said one reason for the very quick growth is
the almost 100 percent penetration rate of WLAN technology in certain product
categories, such as tablet PCs, game consoles and home networking routers.

Devices covered by the IHS report include: These devices include
PCs, cellphones, digital cameras and camcorders, home and handheld video game
consoles, televisions, set-top boxes and portable navigation devices.
