Detroit - OnStar will drop the price of its aftermarket OnStar FMV to $99, including installation, for a limited time from May 6 through June 16.

The telematics device normally retails for $299, plus installation, although a $100 rebate was offered during the fourth quarter of 2011.

The latest promotion is timed for Mothers Day, Fathers Day and graduation day gift-giving, a spokesman told TWICE.

The promotional price will be available through the vast majority of stores selling the device, including Best Buy, Crutchfield, and Fry's, the spokesman said. Because of a discounted wholesale price, retailers will make a margin on the product even though the price of installation is included, the spokesman said.

OnStar FMV takes the shape of a rearview mirror that fits in more than 100 million vehicles on the road. It delivers all of OnStar's core subscription-based telematics services to drivers of cars not made by GM. Services include automatic crash response, turn-by-turn navigation and hands-free calling. The device is available in 2,200 retail outlets, including independent 12-volt retailers and 1,100 Best Buy stores.

To date, OnStar has sold almost 30,000 units since they became available in late July 2011, although distribution wasn't completed until the fourth quarter, the spokesman said. At CES, the company said more than 20,000 consumers purchased the device.

Separately, OnStar said owners of 2011 model-year vehicles were the most likely to purchase and install OnStar FMV, followed by owners of model year 2007 and 2012 vehicles. "The majority of these newer vehicles have some form of built-in navigation or telematics system, yet these drivers still see OnStar's suite of safety and connectivity services as a must-have," claimed Terry Inch, OnStar sales VP, marketing and business development.

Owners of Toyotas accounted for 15.6 percent of OnStar FMV sales, followed by Ford owners at 12.3 percent. More than 30 percent of the Ford owners who installed FMV had Ford Sync as an option when they purchased their vehicles, OnStar said.
