New York – Nikon unveiled Thursday a full-frame DSLR with improved resolution, and image processing.
The Nikon D810 (shipping in July at $3,299.95 suggested retail for body only) is billed as a multimedia HD-SLR for photographers and cinematographers.
It includes an FX-format 36.3-megapixel CMOS sensor and omits an optical low pass filter (OLPF) while delivering higher resolution, broad dynamic range and strong sharpness.
The camera also incorporates an improved Expeed 4 Image Processor with enhanced image quality and a 30 percent overall boost in performance.
Nikon said improved software boosts performance for white balance and reduced false color/moiré.
Other key enhancements include: wider ISO range (64-12,800) for improved low-light performance (expandable to ISO 32 and 51,200); an advanced Scene Recognition System, Picture Control Profiles, and highlight weighted metering options.
For video, the D810 produces FullHD 1080 images, at 60/30/24p frame rates, and like other Nikon FX format cameras offers both FX and DX crop modes for use with a wide range of Nikon lenses.
The camera features uncompressed digital video HDMI output to an external device while recording to SD or CF memory cards.
The camera includes zebra stripes for over-exposed areas, and offers full manual controls and full time AF.
Autofocus metering incorporates an enhanced 51 point Multi-Cam 3500 FX Autofocus system.
The D-810 also adds a new RAW size small format (12 bit) that improves workflow and flexibility.
A bright viewfinder is included along with a 3.2-inch LCD screen.
To boost handling, Nikon added an “i” button to the camera to quickly access commonly used settings.
