Sony Introduces 2nd-Generation CLIE Handheld

NEW YORK — Sony Electronics introduced its second generation CLIE handheld personal entertainment organizer, which the company claims is the first time a Palm-Powered handheld will offer an embedded digital audio player and a high-resolution color screen.

The CLIE PEG-N710 handheld, which was shown at the editorial roundtable with Sony Electronics president Fujio Nishida earlier this month (see p. 1), features a 320 by 320 pixel color screen and will be available nationwide in June for a suggested retail of $500. The product can be pre-ordered at www.sonystyle.com/clie.

The unit plays both native MP3 and encoded-ATRAC3 audio files. The unit reads digital audio files directly from the supplied 8MB Memory Stick removable media, freeing up the internal 8MB (7MB available) of memory for standard PDA applications, the company said.

With 128MB Memory Stick media users can download or transfer up to four hours of digital audio content onto a single stick, the company said.

The unit operates Palm OS software 3.5.2S and is 2 7/8-inches wide by 4 ¾-inches high by 11/16-inches deep, and weighs 5.65 ounces.
