Wikipad Offers Up Downsized Gaming Tablet

Los Angeles – Start-up Wikipad, which delayed the launch of a 10.1-inch Android tablet optimized for gaming, has switched gears and will offer a 7-inch model through leading retailers in the spring at a launch price of $249.

The original $499 10.1-inch tablet was to be available in late October 2012, initially through GameStop stores, but the company said that during the pilot production run it discovered a flaw in the dual-analog stick controller, which needed to be improved to ensure “lightning-fast response times.”

During the delay, the company said, “and after carefully listening to people who voiced their opinions regarding our initial price point, we decided to alter our product roadmap and make the 7-inch tablet at $249.”

The company still plans to offer a 10.1-inch model but didn’t specify a time frame. The tablet’s specs will change, however, the company said.

Both models feature a detachable wraparound game controller, which is included in the price and designed to deliver console performance in a portable device.

For gamers, the tablet’s controller works with Android games designed with game-controller support, and the tablet is PlayStation Mobile-certified for downloading and playing PlayStation Mobile games. When the game controller is detached, the device becomes a fully functional Android 4.1 tablet with access to the Google Play store.

The 7-inch model offers the same performance specs as the original tablet, including 1,280 by 800 HD IPS Gorilla Glass display with 16:10 aspect ratio, Android 4.1 OS, 1.4GHz quad-core CPU, 12-core Tegra 3 GPU, 16GB embedded memory with MicroSD slot for an additional 32GB of storage, 1GB RAM, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, DLNA certification, HDMI output, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.0 with stereo Bluetooth, GPS, 2-megapixel front camera, microphone , and five-pint multitouch capacitive display for faster onscreen typing and better control of touchscreen-based games.

Users get access to entertainment and video game content from PlayStation Mobile, Big Fish Games, Google Play, OnLive and TegraZone, which is Nvidia’s free app that showcases the best games optimized for the Tegra processor. It is also optimize for Cloud-based PlayStation III games.
