Minneapolis - Best Buy interim CEO Mike Mikan pulled no punches in assessing the company's status during his first earnings call with investors this morning.

In an opening statement, Mikan acknowledged that Best Buy was caught "flat-footed" by a rapidly evolving marketplace and that its stores no longer "wow" customers or provide a unique shopping experience.

"Right now we're not even close to good enough," he said.

CEA: Tech Confidence Up In May

Arlington, Va. - Consumer confidence in technology increased in May, while consumer confidence in the overall economy dropped, according to the latest CEA Index released today from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

The CEA Index of Consumer Technology Expectations (ICTE) reached 88.2 in May, an increase of nearly four points from last month. The ICTE, which measures consumer expectations about technology spending, is up seven points from this time last year.

Santa Clara, Calif. - Hewlett-Packard and Apple retained their respective leads in the laptop and tablet categories for the first quarter, according to DisplaySearch's latest report.

HP boosted its first-quarter shipments by about 700,000 units to 8.9 million, giving the company 16.2 percent of the market. However, this is down slightly from the previous first-quarter 17 percent as inroads were made by Acer, Lenovo and Asus. Dell also lost share as it continues its shift to the commercial computer market.

Best Buy Q1 Profits Fall 26%

Minneapolis - Restructuring charges for 41 previously announced store closures dragged down Best Buy's fiscal first-quarter net earnings 26 percent to $158 million.

Excluding the $127 million in one-time charges, profits fell 4.7 percent to $246 million for the three months, ended May 5.

Total revenue rose 2 percent to $11.6 billion while comp-store sales fell 5.3 percent for the three-month period. U.S. revenue increased 5.1 percent to $8.8 billion and domestic comp-store sales declined 3.7 percent.
