Minneapolis - Best Buy interim CEO Mike Mikan pulled no punches in assessing the company's status during his first earnings call with investors this morning.

In an opening statement, Mikan acknowledged that Best Buy was caught "flat-footed" by a rapidly evolving marketplace and that its stores no longer "wow" customers or provide a unique shopping experience.

"Right now we're not even close to good enough," he said.

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Sonos will offer a wireless subwoofer for the first time for its wireless multi-room audio system.

The Sonos Sub will be available in mid-June in high-gloss black-lacquer finish for $699 followed by a black-matte version in October at $599.

Arlington, Va. - Consumer confidence in technology increased in May, while consumer confidence in the overall economy dropped, according to the latest CEA Index released today from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).

The CEA Index of Consumer Technology Expectations (ICTE) reached 88.2 in May, an increase of nearly four points from last month. The ICTE, which measures consumer expectations about technology spending, is up seven points from this time last year.

Santa Clara, Calif. - Hewlett-Packard and Apple retained their respective leads in the laptop and tablet categories for the first quarter, according to DisplaySearch's latest report.

HP boosted its first-quarter shipments by about 700,000 units to 8.9 million, giving the company 16.2 percent of the market. However, this is down slightly from the previous first-quarter 17 percent as inroads were made by Acer, Lenovo and Asus. Dell also lost share as it continues its shift to the commercial computer market.

 New York - Value electronics supplier Ion America revealed Tuesday that is diving into one of the fastest-growing segments of the U.S. camcorder business -- the action camera market -- with both feet.

Mountain View, Calif. - Google closed its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, named a Google executive to replace Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, and hired other new members to Motorola's executive team.

The new CEO, Dennis Woodside, promised "to focus Motorola Mobility's remarkable talent on fewer, bigger bets, and create wonderful devices that are used by people around the world."

Woodside oversaw integration planning for the acquisition and was former president of Google's Americas region.

Minneapolis - Restructuring charges for 41 previously announced store closures dragged down Best Buy's fiscal first-quarter net earnings 26 percent to $158 million.

Excluding the $127 million in one-time charges, profits fell 4.7 percent to $246 million for the three months, ended May 5.

Total revenue rose 2 percent to $11.6 billion while comp-store sales fell 5.3 percent for the three-month period. U.S. revenue increased 5.1 percent to $8.8 billion and domestic comp-store sales declined 3.7 percent.

Salt Lake City - Control4 home-automation products will be included in the displays of MainStreet America, a 14-acre year-round home show scheduled to open in mid-October on the outskirts of Houston.

Promoted as the nation's first home product "theme park," MainStreet America will be outfitted with a two-story 44,000- square-foot guest center, cooking demonstration studio, a custom-home building office, a home remodeling center, mortgage financing services, an interior design studio, a specialty café and a childcare area. 

Dallas - Nebraska Furniture Mart has received a New Development Deal of the Year Award from the Dallas Business Journal for its planned retail and entertainment complex here.

The Omaha, Neb.-based furniture, majap and CE mega-dealer acquired four land tracts totaling 433 acres in the Dallas satellite city of The Colony last year, where it plans to build a mixed-use development anchored by a 1.8-million-square-foot Nebraska Furniture Mart retail and distribution center.
