For many families affected by CHD, February is known as “Heart Month”, which is an opportunity to raise awareness and celebrate the journeys of Heart Warriors. Tiny HeartsCan Foundation’s mission is to raise awareness and to enable the earliest detection of CHD to ensure the best possible outcome for children and parents alike by providing specialized training for sonographers to help them better detect heart defects at the 20-week anatomy scan. This allows families and infants to receive the best medical support as early as possible.
“Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) are the most common type of birth defect, and the leading cause of infant mortality due to defect worldwide,” explained Amy Porter, Tiny HeartsCan Executive Director. “One in 100 infants has a heart defect, so for most of Western Canada, that means that approximately 1,100 infants will be born with a broken heart annually. Unfortunately, half these infants will not receive a potentially life-saving diagnosis before they are born.
