Sears Store-Closing Count Ticks Higher

Hoffman Estates, Ill. — A widely cited report that tallied Sears’ latest round of store closures and layoffs was revised upward from last week.

The count, posted on investment analysis website Seeking Alpha by contributor Mitch Nolen, was raised from just over 100 locations and nearly 5,500 layoffs to 132 facilities and more than 7,000 pink slips.

The amended total includes additional Sears, Kmart and Sears Auto Centers locations, plus a Kmart distribution center and a Sears repair facility.

The report was revised after Sears labeled the initial numbers inaccurate. In response to the updated tally, a Sears spokesman said the company’s physical stores “will continue to play an integral role in our transformation,” but did not dispute that the closures were undercounted in the original story, Nolen noted.

The figures were compiled from liquidation, layoff and closure notices received from Sears Holdings by multiple parties, including employees, property managers and local media, he said.
