Report Shows 170 Million Americans Own GPS Tracking Devices As Market Grows

Report predicts growth over next six months, covers consumer's concerns over technology

Did you know that over the next six months, 70 million Americans will purchase at least one personal GPS device? How about the fact that at least 17 million personal GPS devices, such as Apple’s AirTag and competitor Tile, will be given as gifts this holiday season?

SafeHome.org has conducted a survey of over 1,000 adults about a wide range of GPS tools to assess the popularity, as well as public concern, surrounding these devices.

According to the SafeHome’s research, these personal GPS devices, which include accessories such as smartwatches and fitness monitors, are already used by 170 million Americans. While growing in popularity,  the technology comes with concerns:

  • One-in-three users have serious reservations about the data security of the devices
  • People were most concerned about devices used to track kids’ locations; despite worries, the devices will grow in popularity in the next six months, increasing from two percent to eight percent of all GPS device sales

SafeHome’s report also includes buying tips for personal GPS devices, including what to look for in the technology, connectivity, power source, functionality, user interface, ease-of-use and security features.
