Zenith Inks 8-VSB Licensees

Zenith Electronics, a wholly owned subsidiary of LG, said that six digital television (DTV) manufacturers – Hewlett-Packard, Fujitsu General, Enseo, Jabil Circuit, and Orion subsidiaries World Electric and Korat Denki – signed license agreements for Zenith’s industry-standard DTV reception technology.

Under the agreements, these manufacturers are the latest in a growing list of companies to license Zenith’s eight-level Vestigial Side Band (8-VSB) DTV technology.

Zenith developed the proven, robust 8-VSB digital transmission system at the heart of the ATSC DTV Standard adopted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) a decade ago. The company holds numerous patents essential to the operation of over-the-air digital television receivers compliant with the ATSC DTV Standard.

FCC regulations currently require DTV tuners with 8-VSB demodulators in all TVs 25-inches and larger sold in the United States. By March 1, 2007, under this “FCC DTV Tuner Mandate,” all TVs and other TV reception products (such as DVD recorders, VCRs and PC tuners) will be required to incorporate 8-VSB demodulators.

License terms were not disclosed.
