LOS ANGELES, Calif. — In an unusual Hollywood-style alliance for the handheld industry, Palm announced that a Claudia Schiffer version of the Palm Vx will be released this fall, to be sold exclusively on the Claudia Schiffer website.
The special edition of the Palm Vx will come in a brushed-metallic aqua finish and was unveiled yesterday at a prototype at the Red Herring “Herring on Hollywood” Conference here. Palm said the alliance with Schiffer will help expand its core demographic. “Our goal is to become as essential in pop culture as we are in tech culture,” said Satjiv Chahil, chief marketing officer, Palm Inc. The deal is also expected to push sales to “the fashion-conscious public,” said Chahil and to women.
The Palm Vx is a slimline, 8MB version of the Palm. It will ship with a CD of applications that will be handpicked by Schiffer. Users can purchase the product this fall at ClaudiaSchiffer.com, a new website that is being launched by PTN Media (which is part-owned by Schiffer). The site is designed to be a destination for fashion, style and beauty news and commerce.
