Compaq today introduced the Presario 5861, its first PC to use the new AMD Athlon processor.
The Presario 5861 will be available in about one month through Compaq's build-to-order kiosks located in several CE chains and computer retailers. The 5861 is the first in the new Presario 5800 series and features the Athlon 600MHz processor, 128MB of RAM and a 13GB hard drive. It will carry a $1,999 estimated street price, including a 17-inch monitor.
AMD intends to use the Athlon processors to compete against Intel in the high-end PC market. (See related story.)
