Zenith To Host DTV Technical Seminars

Lincolnshire, Ill., — Zenith, a developer of key technologies selected for the nation’s digital TV broadcasting system, is presenting a series of technical seminars on the U.S. DTV Standards transmission system, in late October and November.

These sessions will be led by Zenith DTV Engineer Gary Sgrignoli and are aimed at broadcasters, broadcast consultants, equipment manufacturers, translator/LPTV and cable operators, and others interested in gaining a better understanding of the U.S. DTV standard’s VSB (vestigial sideband) transmission system and its performance attributes.

Other subjects include VSB transmission measurements, ATSC and FCC compliance, FCC channel allocation factors, ATSC cable carriage methodology, DTV receiver improvements, and VSB field test plan, methodology and test results.

Hardware demonstrations will include basic VSB lab test methodology and results, ATSC and FCC transmission site compliance measurements, field test methodology and results, and DTV receiver improvements. A tutorial manual, featuring in-depth seminar notes and reference material will be provided to each attendee.

The day-long seminars — which are scheduled for October 27 in Oakland, Calif. and November 13 in Chicago – will include demonstrations of HDTV, offer historical perspective of the NTSC and DTV systems, offer data communication and modulation theory, and provide an overview of the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) DTV standard. Also scheduled in the intensive program is a Vestigial Side Band (VSB) tutorial, and VSB lab test plans, methodology and test results.

  • The Oakland seminar, co-sponsored by transmitter manufacturer Larcan and consulting engineers Hammett & Edison in conjunction with the local chapter of the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE), will be hosted by KTVU/Channel 2. Enrollment is limited to 75 people; the registration deadline is Oct. 24.
  • The Chicago seminar will be hosted by WTTW/Channel 11, sponsored by transmitter manufacturer Broadcast Richardson in conjunction with the local chapters of SBE and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). Enrollment at the Chicago conference is limited as well, with advance registration strongly recommended
