WGN To Air Cubs Game In High Definition

Chicago – Superstation WGN-TV said it will broadcast the Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies Aug. 7 game live in high-definition (HDTV) on its digital WGN-DT channel (19).

The HDTV telecast was said to be the first live locally originated HDTV broadcast in the Chicago market.

Although the station’s analog channel enjoys broad-based national carriage on DBS and cable platforms, the digital television station is still only available in the Chicago marketplace. Chicago-area residents with HDTV receivers will be able to view the special telecast, while others can watch the game over WGN-TV’s analog channel in standard definition.

Two separate production teams will be used for the digital and analog telecasts, but Cubs commentators Chip Carray and Joe Carter will cover the game for both. Trio Video’s digital truck X2 and HD Net’s HDTV truck will be used to produce the telecasts.

WGN-DT began transmitting from atop the Sears Tower on Jan. 5.
