Bentonville, Ark. – Walmart is phasing out Amazon.com’s Kindle line of e-readers and tablets.
A memo sent to Walmart store managers dated yesterday and obtained by Reuters indicated that the discount chain will no longer carry the program once it completes its purchase commitments and depletes its inventory. The news service said Walmart confirmed the move and affirmed its commitment to the tablet and e-reader categories.
Kindle hardware is no longer available on Walmart.com a search showed, although a limited assortment of cases and screen protectors are still posted.
Walmart’s move follows Target’s decision to close out its Kindle business last spring. Target was the first retailer outside Amazon to carry the line, and had earlier tapped the e-tailer to run its e-commerce site. But the relationship ended as Target appealed to manufacturers to help it compete against showrooming and expanded its Apple assortment.
Walmart is also an authorized Apple reseller.
