Ultrabooks Drag Down Notebook Shipments: IHS

El Segundo, Calif. — IHS iSuppli has recalculated its original downward forecast for original design manufacturer (ODM) notebook shipments for the first half of 2013.

If this prediction holds true, IHS believes the notebook category will undergo a very poor first quarter and first six months of the year. IHS now believes the top five ODMs will about 35.2 million laptops, down 15 percent from the 41.4 million shipped during the fourth quarter of 2012. The ODMs included in the report are all based in Taiwan and produce notebooks for most of the top-tier PC vendors around the world.

The slowdown is not expected to last past the midway point of the year. The research firm does see the market turning around during the second half when Ultrabook and ultra-thin laptop sales are expected to pick up.

The company cited the continued poor worldwide economic situation tied to slower than anticipated Ultrabook sales to date. The latter is primarily due to consumers buying smartphones and tablets.

For the second half IHS sees ODM notebook shipments to client vendors increasing 5 percent to 156.9 million units, compared with the same period in 2012.
