Sam Goody Gobbles On Cue

Minneapolis – Best Buy subsidiary Musicland Group is changing the name of its rural market On Cue stores to Sam Goody beginning this June.

According to Musicland president Kevin Freeland, tests of the retailer’s Sam Goody format in rural markets showed ‘dramatic improvements’ over average sales of On Cue stores both at opening and over time. The addition of On Cue’s 200-plus locations will boost Goody’s nationwide store count to over 800 units, while leveraging advertising and increasing the efficiency of the Musicland field team, Freeland said.

The former On Cue stores will receive beefed up CE and video game assortments as a result of the conversion, but will maintain their rural-market mix of music and movies. The company expects the transition to be completed by summer’s end. Sam Goody will also open 30 new rural market stores during the company’s current fiscal year.

As part of the consolidation, vice president, retail operations Tim Sheehan was promoted to senior VP/stores, reporting to Freeland and overseeing Sam Goody, Suncoast and Media Play field personnel, retail operations and sales development.

Also, Jon Estes was promoted from vice president of On Cue stores to vice president of Sam Goody stores, Kevin Krenos was promoted from regional director/Media Play to VP/Suncoast stores, and loss prevention director John Pershing succeeds Sheehan as vice president, retail operations. Each reports to Sheehan.
