Q2 PC Shipments Down: IDC

Framingham, Mass. – IDC is projecting worldwide second quarter PC shipments to have declined 11.7 percent, continuing the downward trend for the category started last year.

IDC’s Monthly PC tracker follows the 13.3 percent decline during the first quarter of the year and the overall 4 percent drop experienced in 2012.

The research firm is forecasting a 4.7 percent fall off for the third quarter and 1.6 percent dip for the fourth quarter resulting in an overall 7.8 percent decrease in PC shipments for 2013, as compared to 2012.

“The expectation for the second quarter was not all that high, showing only minor improvement from the first quarter. But the May results reflect deteriorating conditions rather than improvement and the market will probably fall short of projections,” said Loren Loverde, program VP, worldwide PC trackers at IDC.

He does expect the second half to receive a boost from the back-to-school selling season and a bevy of new products that will soon hit stores.
