Secaucus, N.J. — Panasonic introduced Wednesday the DMC-G6 mirrorless compact system camera offering FullHD capture, Wi-Fi connectivity and nearfield communication (NFC) linking technology.
The Lumix G6 (pricing to be announced later) features Panasonic’s Micro Four Thirds Live MOS CMOS sensor technology with 16-megapixel resolution.
Panasonic added its original pixel mix technology to the sensor to maximize the speed advantage native to the CMOS sensor. The current process is designed exclusively for the digital Live MOS sensor to minimize noise.
The Venus Engine image processor also features advanced noise-reduction systems. By extending the control level of noise to 64x, it is possible to remove a large block of noise that was formerly hard to detect, and helps produce a clear, smooth image especially for nighttime scenery.
The camera’s low-light sensitivity is rated to a maximum ISO 25,600 in extended mode.
The built-in Wi-Fi system will enable users to connect to a smartphone or tablet anywhere with one touch to share images, or smartphones or tablets can be used as a multi-capable remote shutter with a monitor.
The Instant Transfer function lets users automatically send photos to a linked smartphone/tablet or another registered device, such as a PC, on a connected in-home network. The NFC capability allows sending an image to a tablet or smartphone by touching the devices together.
Panasonic’s exclusive Lumix Club Cloud service then enables a G6 to automatically synchronize images via the Internet with designated devices and web services, such as Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, Twitter or YouTube.
Creative controls are offered for Panorama, Time Lapse Shot, Stop Motion Animation and Clear Retouch shooting, along with 19 creative filter effects.
The Stop Motion Animation allows for stop-motion video and the Clear Retouch function erases unwanted portions of a picture after shooting.
Still images can be recorded at a 7 fps burst shooting rate at full resolution, and the camera is ready to shoot in 0.5 seconds after start-up. Panasonic includes a full-area touch AF system that works with stills and video.
Video is captured in FullHD/60p resolution in AVCHD Progressive and MP4 with stereo sound and live AF.
The practical full-time AF and tracking AF is available in video recording as well.
The G6 adds a 1,440K-dot OLED live viewfinder, and a 3-inch, 1,036K-dot touchscreen with a 180-degree swivel and 270 degrees of tilt.
In tandem with the G6 announcement, Panasonic also unveiled the Lumix G Vario 14-140mm/F3.5-5.6 ASPH zoom lens with power optical image stabilization. Pricing and availability will be announced later.
The lens complies with the Micro Four Thirds System standard and features a compact and lightweight profile.
Comprised of 14 elements in 12 groups, the lens system features three aspherical lenses and two Extra-low Dispersion lenses to achieve dramatic downsizing despite its 10x optical zoom, while minimizing distortion and chromatic aberration.
