Olympus Unveils E-5 d-SLR

Center Valley, Pa.
– Preparing for the upcoming Photokina Show, Olympus unveiled Tuesday its
latest d-SLR model offering superior image quality when compared with earlier
Olympus models.

The Olympus E-5
camera employs a 12.3-megapixel high-speed Live MOS sensor and TruePic V+ image
processing engine, with Fine Detail Processing technology for greater detail in
the photograph.

The system is said
to have been optimized to maximize the performance of the Zuiko Digital Lenses.

The Olympus E-5
camera will be available in October for a $1,700 estimated street price for the
body, USB cable, video cable, lithium-ion battery and charger, shoulder strap
and software.

Other new features
include a 270-degree, dual-axis, swivel 3-inch LCD monitor with 920,000-dot
resolution, and 10 in-camera art filters, including new dramatic tone that can
be used in all shooting models.

The E-5 also
introduces 720p/30 fps HD video capture in an E-System d-SLR for the first

The E-5 keeps proprietary
Olympus technologies from the past, such as 100 percent digital-specific lenses,
a Supersonic Wave Filter dust-reduction system, the first full-time Live View
system, and a completely splash-proof and dust-proof magnesium-alloy d-SLR

“The E-5 camera
combines the E-System’s legendary durability, reliability and professional
image quality with HD video, multi-exposure and creative art features of the Pen
series,” said John Knaur, Olympus Imaging America d-SLR senior marketing
manager. “Wherever you’re shooting, the rugged splash-proof design of this
camera will capture excellent images and video and withstand any rough
conditions you might encounter.”

The camera also
lowers image noise in photos shot at higher ISO settings (ISO 100 to ISO 6,400),
enabling great results in low-light situations, Olympus said.

In-body mechanical
image stabilization compensates for camera shake. Built-in image stabilization
works with both long focal length lenses, and wide, ultra-wide and fisheye

Users of the E-5
have access to more than 20 Four Thirds lenses to shoot, and video shooters
will find an external stereo mic input.

The E-5’s Multiple
Exposure function for still image capture enables combining up to four shots in
real time or in-camera at a later date.

An internal
digital level sensor detects the camera’s pitch and roll with indicators in the
optical viewfinder, on the control panel and during Live View operation. The
function ensures that images are centered and true.

An HDMI output
jack is included for connection to an HDTV set.

Besides direct-access
buttons for quick access to camera menus, the E-5 camera offers the fastest AF
speed in the world when coupled with the Zuiko Digital ED 12-60mm f2.8-4.0
(24-120mm equivalent) Supersonic Wave Drive Lens.  The E-5 camera has a Twin cross type (fully
biaxial) 11-point AF sensor.

The E-5 camera’s
AF sensor also features a houndstooth pattern phase detection sensor layout
that uses micro-lamination technologies to achieve superior real-world

The E-5 offers up
to 5 fps burst continuous shooting and a 1/8000 second top shutter speed.

The E-5 camera is
compatible with a range of optional external flashes, including wireless
flashes. The E-5 camera can control up to three wireless flash groups

The camera accepts
both CompactFlash Type I UDMA and SD cards (SDHC/SDXC compatible), and provides
a choice of data storage options for enhanced flexibility. It is possible to
transfer image files from one card to the other inside the camera.
