HP Ships Digital Music Device

Palo Alto, Calif. – Hewlett-Packard yesterday began shipping its Digital Entertainment Center de100c, an Internet-enabled digital music device for the home.

The de100c, suggested retail price $999 and originally announced in June, can download music from the Internet, watch streaming video and burn custom CDs. HP is selling the de100c through Best Buy and select Circuit City locations. The de100c is not a PC component, but connects directly to the Web and to a home’s audio system.

John Spofford, HP’s vice president and general manager of consumer entertainment solutions, cited data from Cahners In-Stat that 20 million of this type of product are expected to be sold by 2005.
