Washington — The Federal Communications Commission’s International Bureau announced that EchoStar’s proposed acquisition of satellite assets once controlled by Rainbow DBS has been given regulatory approval.
The Rainbow DBS assets were formerly used by Rainbow, a subsidiary of Cablevision, for the now-defunct HDTV-centric VOOM direct-to-home satellite service.
Under the deal, EchoStar agreed to purchase the Rainbow 1 satellite, which is positioned in the 61.5 degree orbital slot and carries 13 frequencies, 12 of which can be used for spot-beam transmissions. In addition, EchoStar would purchase the rights for 11 more DBS frequencies at the same location.
