In 2012, Pioneer expanded its AppRadio Mode technology to deliver touchscreen control over select Android smartphones as well as over iPhones. Those models include the $400-suggested AVHX3500BHS.
Today, Pioneer offers the most extensive selection of aftermarket head units with such broad control of iPhone functions and apps, and Pioneer stands alone in offering such extensive control over Android phone functions and apps.
In the AVH-X3500BHS, Pioneer packages AppRadio Mode functionality in a head unit that delivers a wide variety of other features controlled through the unit’s 6.1-inch 16:9 WVGA touchscreen display.
The AVH-X3500BHS also features CD/DVD playback, USB connectivity to play music from mass-storage devices, and iPhone 5 compatibility for music and Pandora control as well as for video and AppRadio Mode. The head unit also features built-in HD Radio, iTunes tagging and HD Radio Artist Experience, which displays album art or station logos when available in addition to artist and song-title information.
The DVD receiver streams music via Bluetooth from any Bluetooth-equipped audio source, and it uses Bluetooth to wirelessly control Pandora Internet radio running on an Android phone. Also via its built-in Blue tooth, the head unit works with the iPhone’s voice-control feature.
With Pioneer’s Mixtrax virtual DJ technology, the head unit creates a non-stop mix of music from an iPhone or USB device and adds DJ-like transitions and effects.
The head unit can also be turned into a full-fledged in-dash navigation system with the addition of the AVICU250 add-on navigation module. The model also controls an outboard SiriusXM SXV200 Vehicle Connect Tuner, which offers SiriusXM’s expanded channel lineup.
Pioneer’s new finger-EQ feature lets users change EQ settings by using their finger to draw the desired EQ curve.
The head also features three preamp outputs, DivX/ MP3/WMA/AAC playback, Advanced Sound Retriever technology to improve the quality of compressed music, and 4x50-watt MOSFET amplifier.
