Canon Moving Corporate Headquarters

Lake Success, N.Y. — Canon U.S.A. will relocate its corporate headquarters to Melville, N.Y., the company announced today.

The groundbreaking on the new facility is expected to begin in 2008 and be completed by 2010, a company spokesperson said. Canon purchased 52 acres in Melville from real estate developer The Holiday Organization.

More than 1,000 people work at Canon’s 400,000-square-foot Lake Success headquarters and the firm expects to add 750 more jobs over the next five years. Once the new building plans have been approved, the firm expects to add more office space.

Canon’s first U.S. office was established in 1955 with five employees in Woodside, Queens. It relocated its then 80 employees to Lake Success in 1971.

In a statement announcing the move, Canon CEO Joe Adachi thanked Governor Eliot Spitzer and other state and local officials for their help in keeping Canon on Long Island.

Melville is also home to Canon’s rival Nikon. It was also home to Olympus before they relocated to Center Valley, Pa.
