Washington — Harman International said it will contest a U.S. appeals court decision that the company pay $8 million in damages to Bose for infringing a Bose bass-port patent.
Harman’s JBL and Infinity brands stopped using the design two years ago, Harman said. The disputed design, Bose said, was used in about 34 Harman products.
Harman petitioned the court for a rehearing and said it expects to win, but it nonetheless set aside a one-time reserve of 17 cents per share in its current quarter to cover the payment in case it loses.
The federal Patent and Trademark office plans to reexamine the patent, Harman officials noted.
