Philippine Innovations Shine At CES 2025

The Department of Science and Technology showcases the global reach of Philippine tech and innovation

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) led a delegation at CES 2025 to showcase a diverse range of technologies. These technologies cover various areas, including health, agriculture, innovative and sustainable development, climate change adaptation, disaster resilience, and industry and emerging technologies. This initiative highlights Filipino ingenuity and innovation. The agency’s strategic goal is to establish and foster international relationships and partnerships and promote the Philippines as a technological and scientific advancement hub, contributing to the nation’s social and economic development.

The innovations supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) showcased at CES highlight a unique perspective. While CES is primarily known for featuring consumer electronics from major corporations, the Philippine contingent focuses on addressing practical problems faced by everyday people. The aim is for these solutions to resonate with other countries that encounter similar challenges,” said Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr., Secretary of DOST, during this interview at CES.

“So that is why we have a two-step vision of accelerating innovation in the Philippines and propelling innovations from the Philippines,” said Solidum.

“We think the Philippines would offer technologies that are very practical and fit for a purpose. Several of our products showcased here [at CES] have been recognized globally as … winners in innovation,” Solidum said, adding that DOST travels to other countries and selects innovations to showcase.

DOST organized its CES exhibit into five thematic zones, featuring the following technologies:

  • Agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources: A smart agriculture monitoring platform, an autonomous mobile monitoring robot, and a water quality control and monitoring system for shrimp farms.
  • Health: Nanocomposites for customizable 3D printed prosthetics and wearable robotic devices for rehabilitation and physical therapy.
  • Industry, energy, and emerging technologies consist of a carbon quantum dot sensor for food packaging, intelligent data analysis software, Internet of Things-based machine shop monitoring, a pre-trained AI toolbox system, a supervisory control system and data acquisition training system, and a portable microcontroller training system.
  • Climate change adaptation, mitigation, and disaster resilience: a dengue early warning system, structural health monitoring system, meteorological data acquisition stations, advanced remote environmental data collection and processing system, seismic monitoring for structural health assessments, and a rain-induced landslide susceptibility assessment app.
  • Smart and sustainable communities featured a home energy storage system, water distribution and energy optimization system, education information infrastructure, AI query system, fast charging system for electric vehicles, and VR kits for tourism and real estate.

“Science and technology and innovation are transformative agents for development. If we use science, technology, and innovation, and all countries can apply this for economic development, I think the world might be more peaceful,” Solidum said.

“Science for development is actually science for peace,” Solidum concluded.
