Samsung Display said its flexible OLED panel is now Underwriters Laboratories-certified and posted a video of it getting slammed with a hammer.
Unlike many current glass-covered displays, Samsung developed the OLED panel with a plastic substrate and an overlay window securely adhered to it. While the company was unable to provide a timetable for its availability in consumer electronics, the panel is expected to be used in smartphones, vehicle display consoles, mobile military devices, portable game consoles and tablets.
“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” said Hojung Kim, general manager of the Samsung Display communication team, in a statement.

The UL durability test includes dropping the display 26 times in succession from a height of 1.2 meters, and exposing it to high (71 degrees F) and low (-32 degrees F) temperature tests. The display continued to function normally with no damage to its front, sides or edges, Samsung said.
The display also passed a subsequent 1.8-meter drop test.
Underwriters Laboratories is an official testing company for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor.
