CEA Says FTC’s Internet of Things Report Advances the Conversation

ARLINGTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The following statement is attributable to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, in regard to the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) staff report on the Internet of Things (IoT):

“With over 900 exhibitors showing IoT devices at the 2015 International CES, the FTC’s staff report is timely. Already the IoT touches many aspects of our lives, and in the near future our interactions with these devices will be so routine and all-encompassing they will go almost unnoticed. At the same time, we remain vigilant about the privacy and security of information IoT devices collect and share. Companies across the IoT ecosystem must continue to earn consumer trust to bring forth the full benefits of IoT.

“We commend the FTC for recognizing the enormous personal, economic and societal benefits that IoT enables, and the agency’s efforts to engage and educate businesses on how to secure the IoT ecosystem. However, it’s too early to rush out laws that may choke off innovation. CEA is at the forefront of discussing these issues, and discovering how best to protect consumer privacy and security while encouraging continued innovation. We look forward to further discussion of these issues as the IoT matures and brings businesses and consumers the vast benefits of ubiquitous connectivity.”
