Snapchat Changes To Snap Inc., Debuts Video-Recording Spectacles

These sunglasses are indeed much cooler looking than Google Glass.

Snapchat made two big announcements over the weekend: It is changing its name to Snap Inc., and it unveiled a pair of video-recording sunglasses known as Spectacles.

The name change was done to mark the company’s inroads into categories beyond its video-sharing app.  Said company founder Evan Spiegel in a blog post: “When we were just getting started it made sense to name our company Snapchat Inc., because Snapchat was our only product! Now that we are developing other products, like Spectacles, we need a name that goes beyond just one product — but doesn’t lose the familiarity and fun of our team and brand.”

Spectacles, the company’s first product, features built-in video cameras that can reportedly record a day’s worth of 10-second video clips on a single charge. The glasses start recording when they are tapped; perhaps fearing privacy concerns, a light illuminates on the glasses to indicate recording has begun.

Content is transferred to an app via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi in what will be a new “circular video format,” the company said.

Video will be captured with 115-degree field of view, it noted, and will play full screen on any device.

Spectacles will be sold in blue, black or red. A charging case is also included. Although the company didn’t reveal pricing or shipping details, Seth Stevenson of The Wall Street Journal, who received an exclusive sneak peek, said they will be available this fall for $129.
