Samsung Brings PGA Golf Championship To Smart TVs

Ridgefield Park, N.J. — Samsung Electronics America introduced Monday the PGA Championship TV app, an event-based golf app designed for the company’s smart-TV platform.

The PGA Championship TV app provides a new and interactive way to experience the PGA Championship, being held Aug. 7-10 in Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.

Samsung smart-TV viewers can use the app to access scoring, player and course information, and exclusive behind-the-scenes and tournament-related content from the event.

The PGA Championship app is also available on select Samsung Galaxy mobile devices.

The app, which was developed in collaboration with Turner Sports, will be available to Samsung smart TVs from 2013 and 2014.

Available content will include the following:

*Broadcast Mode allows users to complement and customize watching the PGA Championship on TNT and CBS by letting users toggle between alternate live video feeds (i.e. Par 3 Cam and Marquee Group), launch an interactive leaderboard, and keep tabs on favorite golfers.

*Pick the Hole Location Challenge Hosted by Jack Nicklaus lets users cast a live vote for the hole location to be used on No. 16 during the final round of the PGA Championship on August 10. Fans can use Samsung smart TVs to vote in real time using interactive content triggered during the live broadcast from Aug. 7-9, using the TV’s remote. Voting will conclude Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. EST.

*Multiscreen Functionality will let consumers seamlessly pair their TV and mobile devices through the companion Android app to create a golf experience. Viewers will be able to view the action and exclusive content on mobile devices, share the action with family and friends by mirroring the game to their 2014 smart TVs, and control smart-TV functions, Samsung said.

Samsung will be on site at the championship with a massive experiential area. The showcase will feature 23 curved Ultra HD TVs, the latest Galaxy Tab S devices and NX compact system cameras. The Samsung Experience allows attendees to catch up on the action, share moments from the day’s events and recharge themselves and their mobile devices.

In the area, the championship will be shown on a super-sized, 16-foot curved display consisting of nine 65-inch curved Ultra HD TVs. Spectators can also participate in a “Perfect Shot Challenge,” set up to let fans take a chip shot from a specially developed 13th hole bunker.

The effort will tie in with Samsung’s expanded “The Curve Changes Everything” ad campaign featuring TV spots during the PGA Championship telecast. Samsung will sponsor highlights of the top play during each day of competition with the “Samsung Shot of the Day.”

In addition, the campaign will feature a print presence in the August issue of Golf Digest, digital components on PGA.com and Yahoo Sports’ Golf Channel, and out-of-home components.
