AT&T Gets Exclusive On Galaxy Alpha

Dallas — Samsung’s first metal-frame smartphone will be available exclusively on the AT&T network on Sept. 26, when AT&T-owned stores will offer the device at $199 with two-year contract.

The compact 4G LTE Android phone features 4.7-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, the soft-touch plastic back of other recent Galaxy phones, 2.5GHz quad-core processor, 32GB embedded memory, 12-megapixel rear camera and 2.1-megapixel front camera.

The carrier currently has no plans for availability through independently owned AT&T-brand stores and other indirect retailers.

The phone will also be available at $612 without contract, at $25.55 per month on AT&T’s Next18 installment-payment/upgrade program, and $30.65 per month on AT&T Next12. With AT&T Next 12, users can upgrade to a new phone after 12 months, and under Next 18, users can upgrade after 18 months. Alternately, users can pay off the smartphone after 20 monthly installments under AT&T Next 12 or 24 monthly installments under AT&T Next 18.

Like the Galaxy S5, the phone features fingerprint scanning to unlock the device, pro photo-editing tools, and a built-in heart-rate monitor.

The phone also packs such camera features as HDR, panorama mode and selective focus. An ultra-power-saving mode turns the screen to black and white and shuts off non-essential apps so users can send and receive calls and text messages for 24 hours on only a 10 percent charge. The phone also features Samsung’s S Health fitness app.

Other specs were unavailable.

It will be available in charcoal black, white or frosted gold.

New AT&T customers and existing AT&T customers who activate a new line of smartphone service on AT&T Next get a $100 bill credit.
