Apple Joins Wireless Charging Consortium Ahead Of iPhone 8

The long-speculated addition of wireless charging to Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8 seems more than just rumor as Apple has officially joined the Wireless Power Consortium, the industry group behind the Qi charging standard.

The WPC quietly added Apple to the member list on its website on Sunday and today confirmed Apple’s membership to TWICE.

“The companies with the largest market share in mobile phones are now members of the WPC and discussing the standardization of wireless charging.  As we have seen in the past year, Qi has become the de facto standard for wireless power, and this year we expect to see even more momentum by the entire ecosystem,” the WPC said in a statement.

Several third-party solutions on the market now can wirelessly charge an iPhone but the legions of iPhone fans have been expecting a more elegant, built-in solution for a few years now. As Apple tends to do, it has waited until the technology was established before adopting it into its handsets.

The Qi charging standard is the market leader and already incorporated in flagship phones from Samsung, Google, Microsoft, Blackberry, HTC and Kyocera, among others.

IHS Technology released the results of a survey indicating that 90 percent of mobile consumers want wireless charging on their next phone.

IHS predicted that more than 350 million total devices capable of wireless charging will ship in 2017, with a large jump in growth driven by the addition of a wireless-capable iPhone.
