Nebraska Readies Dallas Megastore

The Colony, Texas — Opening day is quickly approaching for Nebraska Furniture Mart’s (NFM’s) 1.9 million-square-foot showroom, office and warehouse complex here in this Dallas suburb.

The mega-emporium, which the company expects will be the largest-volume home furnishings store in North America, will also anchor a 433-acre, $1.5 billion shopping and entertainment center dubbed Grandscape which NFM is developing.

Local newspaper the Lewisville Leader recently previewed the massive facility, describing a 560,000-square-foot showroom that will hold over 100,000 furniture, majap, CE and flooring SKUs, and will feature “interactive displays, state-of-the-art presentations and inspirational room settings.”

Store director Ed Lipsett said on the media tour that NFM has begun to load the showroom, which will be supported by a 1.3 million-square-foot distribution center connected to the back of the store. Together with a “fast and easy customer pick up process,” the retailer will be able to load over 100 cars at a time, he said.

The store will also offer home installation services for appliances and home theaters, he noted.

Besides readying the showroom for its spring opening, the company is busy training over 2,000 recently hired staffers, which Lipsett described as a massive challenge.

“It’s a miniature university making sure they’re prepared, have intense product knowledge and that they can offer customer service like no other in the DFW area,” he said.

A two-time winner of TWICE’s Excellence in Retailing Awards and a longtime member of the NATM Buying Corp., NFM also operates mega-emporiums in Omaha, Neb., and Kansas City, Kan.

The business was founded with $500 by Rose Blumkin in the basement of her husband’s Omaha pawn shop in 1937, and became one of the nation’s largest furniture, bedding, CE, majap and flooring retailers by offering an expansive assortment at competitive prices, and adhering to Rose’s dictate to “Sell cheap and tell the truth.”

Billionaire investor Warren Buffet acquired a majority stake in NFM in 1983.
