Vonage To Offer Uniden VoIP Cordless

Edison, N.J. — Vonage and Uniden announced a partnership today to offer a multi-handset cordless phone system that can place calls over Vonage’s VoIP network.

The UIP 1869 5.8GHz multi-handset system will be distributed by Uniden; shipping date and price were not announced.

Uniden initially pitched the UIP 1869, introduced at International CES, as an alternative to “locked” IP equipment that can only place calls over a single network. The company has since introduced two iterations of the phone —one with provider 8×8 and today with Vonage — that are locked into a single IP network.

The phone’s corded base unit plugs directly into a broadband modem to enable IP calling to any of its up-to ten handsets.

The UIP1869 becomes the second 5.8GHz model to be equipped with Vonage’s service; the other, the VTech ip80, began shipping last month.

Vonage has approximately 600,000 lines in service and claims to be adding more than 15,000 lines a week to its network.
