- Research In Motion unveiled two new
BlackBerry smartphones that operate in 3G mode in the U.S. and in
overseas markets.

During an event here for the enterprise market,
the company introduced the Bold 9650, which operates in U.S. 850/1900MHz CDMA
EV-DO Rev. A 3G markets and in overseas 2.1GHz HSPA 3G markets. The Bold 9650
also operates in quad-band EDGE/GSM/GPRS mode.

In the U.S., Sprint committed to offering
the device, which features hard QWERTY keyboard, beginning May 23 through all
distribution channels. The price is $199 with a new two-year service agreement,
after a $100 mail-in rebate. With the Bold, Sprint customers will be able to make
or receive phone calls in more than 185 countries and access BlackBerry data
services in almost 150 countries.

The other new international-3G phone is the Pearl 3G, said to be the smallest BlackBerry to date at
4.25 inches by 1.96 inches by 0.52 inches. It's also the first BlackBerry with
802.11n Wi-Fi, joining 802.11b/g. The phone operates in 3G HSPA mode in U.S. networks
and in overseas 2.1GHz networks. It also features quadband EDGE/GPRS/GSM mode.

The Pearl
3G comes in two versions: The 9100 version features a condensed 20-key QWERTY
keyboard, and the 9105 features a traditional 14-key phone keyboard, both with
SureType software to complete words as a user types.

The phone will be available through
undisclosed carriers beginning in May. The company didn't disclose whether, in U.S. 3G
networks, it will operate in AT&T's 850/1900MHz bands or T-Mobile's
1700/2100MHz 3G bands.
