12/26/2013 11:46:00 AM Eastern

Washington Factory shipments of major appliances rocketed 18.1 percent in November to nearly 5 million units as retailers loaded up for Thanksgiving/Black Friday weekend sales events and the unofficial start of the holiday selling season.

According to the latest monthly data compiled by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), every product classification showed an increase, with the majority up by the double digits. Leading the charge among the core categories: gas cooktops, ahead 36.2 percent year over year, while majap mainstays washers and refrigerators were up 22 percent and 16 percent, respectively.

The so-called “AHAM 6,” an amalgam of washer, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator, freezer, range and oven shipments, rose 21.4 percent, and year-to-date shipments of all white goods increased to 5.1 percent thanks to the November spike.
