WAYNE, N.J. – The second wave of HDTV movies produced for home viewing in JVC’s D-Theater D-VHS cassette format were recently announced by three studios.
The home entertainment units of DreamWorks, Fox and Universal each announced additional titles would soon be added to their recently launched collections of D-VHS HDTV movies with D-Theater copy protection.
DreamWorks Home Entertainment – based in Glendale, Calif. – said it would release on August 20 Galaxy Quest, the sci-fi action comedy starring Tim Allen, at a $44.99 suggested retail price.
The critically acclaimed feature also stars Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell and Enrico Colantoni.
Century City- based Fox Home Entertainment said it would release on August 6 Independence Day, followed on September 3rd by Entrapment, Don’t Say A Word, and Big Momma’s House. Each title will carry a $34.98 suggested retail price.
Independence Day features Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Judd Hirsch, Margaret Colin, Randy Quaid, Robert Loggia, Harvey Fierstein, Harry Connick, Jr., and Vivica A. Fox. It won the 1997 Academy Award for Best Special Effects, and centers on an all-out invasion against the human race by extraterrestrial aliens.
Entrapment, which stars Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones, is an action/intrigue story about the hunt for the thief of a priceless Rembrandt stolen from a New York high-rise.
Don’t Say A Word stars Michael Douglas as a psychiatrist desperately trying to unravel the 10-year-old secret locked in the disturbed mind of patient Brittany Murphy.
Big Momma’s House is a comedy featuring Martin Lawrence as an FBI agent who goes under cover as an overbearing, oversized Southern Grandmother to pursue an escaped prisoner. He winds up falling in love with the con’s sexy former flame.
Universal City, Ca.-based Universal Studios Home Video will release the supernatural thriller End Of Days on August 20th at a $44.98 suggested retail price.
The film, starring action-king Arnold Schwarzenegger, takes the audience on a whirlwind ride from Vatican City to New York City’s Time Square as the end of the millennium approaches. It also stars Kevin Pollack, Rod Steiger and Gabriel Byrne.
Currently, the D-Theater D-VHS cassettes will play only in JVC’s HD D-VHS deck, which is equipped to decode the D-Theater encryption system. D-VHS is currently the only high-definition format available for pre-recorded HDTV movies.
