July Stereo TV Sales Slip 0.1%

Stereo color TV sales to dealers in July slipped slightly from last year, breaking a string of three consecutive up months, according to figures compiled by CEMA.

July stereo color sales totaled 952,800, off a scant 0.1% from July 1998, to put the sales total for the year's first seven months at 6.2 million, up 1.7%. In contract, sales of lower-priced monaural sets had the largest monthly increase of the year, with a 7.7% July rise to 832,800, though full-period sales of 5.45 million were off 0.5%.

The combined performance left stereo with a 53.4% share of the overall July color market, down from the 55.2% held in the same month last year. The seven-month share stood at 53.2%, up from last year's 52.7%.

Despite the sluggish sales performance, the indicated annualized seasonally adjusted selling rate for stereo color TVs in July was an above average 12.7 million, and lifted the rate for the first seven months to a 1999 cumulative high 12.6 million.
