Future Image: 500M Camera Phones To Sell Worldwide

New York — Research firm Future Image announced an upward revision of its camera phone forecast today, estimating that roughly 500 million camera phones will be sold this year worldwide

Camera phones are predicted to grow dramatically through 2009, reaching an estimated 900 million in sales to account for roughly 90 percent of the total mobile phone market, according to Future Image.

Currently, camera phones represent 67 percent of total mobile phone sales, according to Future Image.

The firm initially expected camera phone sales to hit 320 million this year but revised its findings after more research.

“The explosive growth in personal network-connected image capture devices is a fundamental shift, comparable for instance to the rapid spread of PCs in the 90s — but on a much larger scale,” said Alexis Gerard, Future Imaging’s president, in a statement announcing the revision.
