AMD Intros Speedier Athlon XP Chip

Sunnyvale, Calif. – AMD today introduced its fastest desktop processor, the Athlon XP 3000+.

The new processor has a total of 640Kb of on chip memory, about 70 percent more then previous AMD chips, which optimizes the chip for PC gaming and video editing, the company said. AMD no longer reports the clock speed of its processors, but the chips naming structure tends to generally indicate where they fall. Following this rule the 3000+ should be in the 3GHz range.

The NEC-CI desktop, available only in Europe, is first PC equipped with the 3000+, but the company expects other vendors to announce their support.

The processors are priced at $588 each in lots of 1,000.
