Concord, Mass. — TomTom plans spring availability of its next-generation portable navigation device (PND) for motorcycles.

The $299-suggested Rider, available in the spring, provides bikers with more options to create a customized route. Its 4.3-inch glove-friendly screen has been improved for use in rain and in bright direct sunlight. A new charging dock turns Rider on and off with the bike’s ignition.

Bluetooth is available to send voice instructions to a user’s headset.

New routing options include a Winding Roads option to select the route with the most curves. “The overwhelming majority of bikers use their motorcycle for recreational purposes, and many actively seek out routes that offer fantastic scenic touring experiences,” said Corinne Vigreux, managing director of TomTom Consumer.

Bikers can also customize route options by using TomTom’s Upload Routes and Go feature, which lets users download routes posted online by other riders to a PC and upload them to the Rider. Users can also download Tyre PC software to search, create and edit routes on a PC before uploading them to the Rider.

Other features include free lifetime map updates and Map Share, which lets consumers in the TomTom Map Share community share such changes as new speed limits, blocked roads and detours.

TomTom’s IQ Routes uses a database of real travel times for various times of the day on various roads to produce an optimum route and arrival time. The device also stores speed-camera locations, including cameras reported by other users, and warns of average speed checks for the road ahead.
