New Cases, Bags At CES Offered Fashion, Function

Color and styling stepped up to the plate at CES as suppliers offered a variety of new products for the new year.

Fellowes, for example, featured its new EXO line of CD and DVD cases that have strong external bumpers, or an exo-skeleton, to provide shock-absorbing protection. The line has just started shipping at retail prices ranging from $9.99 to $14.99. VP Mark Naidoff said the exo styling will also be offered in high-capacity storage.

In other news, Fellowes featured its $29.99 CD Labeling Kit that is co-branded with Neato and announced a joint venture with Cirque to produce a Fellowes line of touchpads. The touchpads will include three models at retail prices of $29.99, $59.99 and $69.99 and are scheduled to ship in April.

Also talking about hard plastic cases with new styling was Allsop, which launched its DiscGo line in several bright colors. Designed for both portable and desktop storage, the cases will be available in 30- and 60-CD sizes at street prices of $5.99 and $7.99, respectively, marketing director Jim Hassi said.

Allsop also featured a new labeling kit, the DiscID CD-R Label Kit, at a street price of $24.99.

Case Logic came to CES with a number of new lines, including its new CD-Y line of cases in blue, yellow and purple accents at suggested retail prices ranging from $11.99 to $16.99 for a CD player case. In addition, the base color is gray instead of black, noted Marca Armstrong, senior product manager. "This is a youthful product," she said. "It appeals to the kid in everybody."

Also new from Case Logic are MP-3 cases to hold most players. They feature zipper pockets for memory cards and are being offered in three colors -- red, blue and olive green -- at a suggested retail price of $11.99.

The company is also ready for portable DVD players, with the new PDV-1 at a suggested retail price of $34.99. It features an ultra-thick padded blend of nylon and Koskin and a non-slip surface on the bottom.

Case Logic is also making a color statement with its new translucent hard cases for CD-ROMs. The RP-12 cases hold 12 CD-ROMs or six with instruction booklets and retail for $5.99 each. They come in four iMac colors: purple, green, orange and blue.

Also new were digital camcorder bags, including the DVC-40 that can be either a waist pack or a shoulder pack. This nylon bag ships in February at a suggested retail price of $29.99, while a Koskin version is $39.99. At the top of this line is the DVC-60 in Koskin for $44.99.

New notebook cases were also on view in the Case Logic booth, including a top-loading Koskin model at $89.99 that converts to a weekend bag by taking out the computer padding. A nylon backpack notebook case is being introduced at $59.99, and a new sling pack that fits over one shoulder is $69.99. And for PDAs, the company offers the Koskin PC Palm Case at $24.99.

Fashion trendsetter Roundhouse featured its new spot color styling in its CDProjects CD cases and visors, along with animal prints and its Cargo line of CD cases in khaki, olive and black. The animal-print CD wallets will retail for $11.99, the company said, compared to $9.99 for others.

Also new from Roundhouse are three leather laptop bags at suggested retail prices ranging from $100 to $130 and new DVD cases.

Recoton's Ambico showed three camcorder bags at CES, all made of Ballistic 2000. Suggested retail prices are $29.99, $39.99 and $49.99.

Mead Laserline was at CES with its updated Media Zone line with higher capacities. The company also joined the color ranks with its Media Zone Folio CD cases in six colors. They are offered in three new designs: Sportz, Classic and Fashion.

In addition, Mead expanded its CD wallet offerings with new translucent Laser wallets that can hold 24, 48 or 100 CDs. They come in various colors designed to appeal to Generation Y.
