Camcorders, DVD Shipments Grow During November

The onset of the holiday selling season helped loosen the bite of this year’s declining analog video sales in November, but only camcorders and DVD players managed to post growth numbers over last year’s period.

According to Consumer Electronics Association sales-to-dealer numbers for November, analog direct-view televisions dipped 20.5 percent to 1.9 million units from a year ago. The category has now posted negative year-to-year growth for eight months — an indication that the growth of digital television sets and monitors are eroding business for older platforms. Year-to-date totals tallied 18.6 million sets, down 14 percent from November 2000. The month’s annualized selling rate, which is based on traditional selling patterns, registered 18.5 million, while the average selling rate for the first 10 months totaled 20.5 million.

TV/VCR combo units continued to stumble with factory unit sales reaching 427,087 units in the month, down 16.8 percent. Cumulative totals for the year also fell 9.7 percent to 4.1 million pieces. The annualized selling rate for the month was 4.16 million while the average selling rate for the year was 4.48 million.

The decline in analog project TV sales slowed considerably in November from the previous month (which was down 25.6 percent), as factory sales posted a 5.1 percent decline to 90,297 units. However, cumulative totals for the year were down 22.2 percent at 834,969 units. The annualized selling rate shows 949,551 units, while the year-to-date selling rate shows 951,551.

VCR decks sales continued to be soft with November sales down 44.7 percent at 1.42 million decks for the month. Cumulative totals for the year were down 37.2 percent at 13.5 million units. The annualized selling rate for the category was 12.9 million units while the selling rate for the year was 14.7 million.

Camcorders rebound from their second worst month in October to post their strongest month of the year to date with 627,873 units, up 29.4 percent from a year ago. However, the category’s cumulative totals were still down 8.9 percent for the year, on factory sales of 4.82 million units. The annualized selling rate was 16.7 million units.

DVD Video players continued to impress, with sales of 1.78 million units, up 105.5 percent for a year ago. Cumulative sales for the category tallied 10.8 million players, up 50.7 percent from a year ago.
