First DTS:X Blu-Ray Disc Due July

Calabasas, Calif. — Ex Machina will be the first major motion picture released on Blu-ray with DTS:X object-based surround, DTS said. The disc will be available July 14 from Lionsgate at a suggested $24.99.

Other English soundtracks on the disc will be in DTS Headphone:X, 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio,  and English 5.1 DTS Digital Surround.

DTS didn’t say how many DTS:X discs would be launched this year.

Rival Dolby Laboratories currently has 10 titles released with Dolby Atmos object-based surround sound, with Jupiter Ascending due June 2 and The Gunman due June 30.

Audio components with DTS:X decoding are expected to be available starting in the summer, DTS previously announced.

The soundtracks of DTS:X Blu-ray discs will be playable on existing Blu-ray players, which will pass the audio content through their HDMI outputs as bit streams to DTS:X-equipped AVRs and AVPs for decoding.

The technology is also expected to appear on future 4K Blu-ray discs, given that DTS:X metadata is delivered via DTS-HD Master surround soundtracks, which are approved for use on Blu-ray discs and will appear on future 4K Blu-ray discs.

DTS previously said DTS:X will appear first on Blu-ray discs before it is adopted by streaming services.
